Science

This year in fifth grade your students will be exploring many concepts in the areas of life science, physical science, earth science, and engineering. In all units we will be focusing on scientific inquiry, experimentation, and design.

In our recent unit we have been studying the relationships among living and non-living things in ecosystems. Students have created their own ecosystems made up of a terrarium and an aquarium, in order to sustain various plant and animal life. Using their own ecosystems, students are making detailed observations, predictions, and conclusions about the relationships between different organisms.

We have studied the flow of energy in a food chain and food web, the roles of different organisms in their environment, the relationship between groups of living organisms in the same habitat, animal classification, and the purpose of animal adaptations. We are now beginning to look at the effects of pollutants on the stability of our test ecosystems. Students will be designing their own experiments and determining the elements of a "fair test" or a sound experiment.
